Growing up in Colombia, my parents always sent us on vacation to visit our grandparents house. We spent most the days playing outside on the streets. When we would get back to the house, my abuelita would go into the kitchen and chop open a coconut to make us drink coconut water. As she handed me my cup, I waited until she turned around to throw it in the bushes. I used to ask for a soda, but she insisted that coconut water would hydrate us better. Unfortunately little kids don’t understand the nutrients of good food and don’t always give the healthy stuff a fighting chance.
Looking back, that’s unfortunate because I missed out on a great tasting, healthy drink. Moving to a new country, I realized the benefits of a lot of food and drinks that were offered to me as c child. A girlfriend I take Zumba with was drinking coconut water one day after a class. I laughed and told her about my childhood experience with coconut water. She told be her family used to make her drink it in Brazil all the time too, the only difference was, she actually did. She started telling me all of the benefits of coconut water. I know coconut water is good for you, but I didn’t know it was that good for you!

Great for Kids
My daughter asks for coconut water when I pack her lunch. It’s funny though, I didn’t even introduce her to it. We were walking in the grocery store and there was a sample stand set up. She tasted it and practically made me buy it for her. They conveniently sell the coconut water in small little juice boxes. Her favorite flavor is the coconut water with Guava.
If the coconut water benefits aren’t enough to make you want to try it, then just consider the taste. It is a sweet drink that goes down easy and quenches your thirst. Also, coconut water and weight loss is one of the modern day trends. However, it’s likely to stick around because it’s the nutrients that causes weight loss. It’s low in calories and sugar, which is great for any healthy eater. I love the fact that it can replace sports drinks. I’ve never liked energy or sports drinks, so I’m glad I have something else that hydrates me quick and lasts.
Keep in mind that different flavors have different nutrients. There are some flavors that have a higher sugar content than others. So just be sure to read the labels once you decide to try it. To warm up to coconut water, try it in your morning smoothie. I love to add coconut water with spinach, kale, lemon juice and apples. That’s actually a well known smoothie recipe called “The Lilly”. Trust me, give it a shot. You and your family will love the taste and the nutritional value of coconut water.
