How Simply Smiling will Help Your Weight Loss

When I was reading my new book, my favorite book at that, I learned some pretty interesting things. In Every Day a Friday, by Joel Osteen, we learn the power of smiling.

Most people forget how important it is to smile. I know the first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is smile. I’ve learned that no matter what our situation in life is, as long as we wake up in the morning, we’re doing alright.

I make sure to wear a smile right when I wake up because it is the first thing my husband and my daughter see. I know by them seeing me happy, they subconsciously feel happy as well.

As we get ready for work and school, as I make them breakfast and as we depart for our day ahead, I continue to show smile in order for it to be the last expression they see on my face. I know this helps them start their day off right and in a positive state of mind. I know this because in return they smile at me and their smiles is what I think about all day.

The actual act of smiling feeds positive energy to your brain letting your brain know that everything is good, which leads to a sense of euphoria and positive actions.

I’ve also learned over the years that when you smile, even to perfect strangers, it brightens their day as well, even just for a moment. Smiles are contagious and I try to spread them as much as I can.

People who I have nothing in common with know my name, and I know theirs, because I shine a smile their way every time I walk into my office building. Just by smiling, you are able to build small relationships with all different types of people from all different walks of life.

Smiling and Exercise

When I go to the gym, I smile the entire time. I make sure that the first thing I do is pass by a mirror and flash a huge smile at myself., then it just makes me laugh. A lot of people may think I look silly or overly happy, but since when is that a bad thing?

By exercising with a smile, I know I’m getting the best workout I possible can. My energy levels pick up and I feel rejuvenated. By smiling, I automatically feel happy. It makes me think about happy memories or funny conversations.

When I think positively, I believe I can do anything. And that’s not just in my career or my personal life, but affects my fitness goals as well.

Even when you’re in a fitness class, whether it’s spin, boot camp or even yoga, the instructor always promotes smiling. They know that by smiling, you lift your mood and forget the negative in your life for the time you’re exercising.

Smiling Helps Eating Healthy

When we have a great workout session, it overflows into our eating habits. That’s why by working out harder, we eat better.

We also chose to eat better when we feel better. When we’re in good moods, we want to keep it that way. Our bodies often crave healthy, nutricious food instead of food that will make us feel too full or even sick.

When you feel good, you only want to put “feel good food” into your happy body.

So that’s why I believe, truly believe, that our smile is one of the most powerful tools we have. And when you pass around your smile, you are passing around happiness. Scientist say humans mirror what they see. So when they see someone smiling, they naturally smile; they are contagious!

It’s much better to smile, even when you’re not in a very good mood. I know it’s hard and sometimes feels useless, but it’s not. You’ll be surprised how much just smiling will help. And if it’s hard at first, fake it till you make it! I know you’ve heard that saying before.

Just by pretending you’re happy helps your body switch from a grouchy, cranky mood to more up-lifted and, well, happy.

There has been studies that say smiling actually gives off chemicals to your body saying you’re in a good mood. These chemicals release endorphins, natural pain killers and serotonin. Together these three make us feel good. Smiling is a natural drug.

My Challenge for You

We know that Monday’s are the hardest for most people. They are tired and not as motivated as the rest of the week. So today, walk around with a smile on your face- the whole day!!

Even when you feel like it’s useless or you simply don’t want to, just do it. By the end of the day you’ll see that there are a whole bunch of benefits of smiling. Keep track of all the smile s you get in return and let me know how it worked for you.
