Tiss the Season for Giving

Tiss the Season for Giving

When I was a little girl, my mother taught us how important it was to give to others in need. Although this was a year around philosophy, it was especially important during the holidays.

So I grew up with the mentality that during the holidays, it was our job as a community to seek out others who weren’t as fortunate and help them enjoy this special time.

Sure it is great to give donations to charities, anything you can think of is always helpful. But my thinking is I want to help a family who I know isn’t getting any support. I want to know who they are, what they need and how I can give it to them. I like it to be more of a personal connection rather than a blind donation.

So what I’ve started to do as an adult and now having my own income, I like to randomly chose a family, whether I know them personally or if they are just a member in my community, doesn’t matter; I’ve done both.

I sit with my family and we chose who we want to help out, someone we’ve met over the years who we know need some help. I look their name up in the phone book and find their address. This may sound kind of creepy, but it’s fun to do with my two young girls and husband.

Once we have their address, we send them a card with a check. The card simply says this:

Dear Stevenson Family,

My family and I wanted to wish you all a very merry Christmas and happy holidays. Part of our family tradition is to find members of the community and give them a holiday gift. I hope you don’t mind, but we chose your family this year. Enclosed is a check to do with whatever you so chose- buying gifts, making a great feast or getting the best Christmas tree you can find! We are excited to share this holiday with you all as I hope you find it exciting and enjoyable as well. You are important to us and our community and we are grateful to have you in our lives. I hope this just shows your kindness and generosity does not go unnoticed. Thank you for being wonderful people. Hope you have a great holiday!

Here’s to Your Family,

A Family who Cares

And that’s it. It takes very little effort on our part, yet it changes the lives of others. You’d be surprised at how the smallest little deeds have such huge, amazing affects on people.

I hope this time of year makes you feel giving as well. You don’t need to send money or even toys. All you have to do is show people you care about them and they will forever be grateful. Give it a shot, making people smile is an exhilarating feeling and also contagious.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

I have a passion for helping people change their lives. I started out helping my friends and now I give advice and tips to perfect strangers who have now become my friends. I love what I do and I wouldn’t change my life even if I could. This kind of happy is truly a gift and I’ll do whatever it takes to be able to give this gift to others.
